Driver Theory Test
The first step in obtaining your driving instructor theory test is to apply for your individual Eligibility number with the RSA, once you have received this then you can visit www.theorytest.ie to apply for the test which is carried out at over 41 locations around the country.
The test comprises of 100 questions and gives multiple choice answers, similar to the theory test you obtain for your provisional license and you will be allocated 90 minutes to complete. The driver theory test covers several topics, mainly in depth analysis of the rules of the road. All topics covered on the theory test can be found in revision test material which our instructor will guide you on.
The results needed to pass the theory test are broken down into five categories as follows however please note if you do not pass your test on your first try you can apply again.
Practical Driving Test
Similar to the standard Irish driving test, this test sets out to examine your knowledge of the RSA’s rules of the road and also your practical knowledge and skills as a confident driver. On the day of your test you must arrive early and provide your full valid license, tax and insurance discs displayed correctly in your vehicle.
Your test will last anything between sixty to ninety minutes depending on road conditions on the day and will cover approximately twenty-five to thirty kilometres.
Similar to the standard test you will spend time answering questions at the beginning, allow for an under bonnet check and show that you have stored a hi-vis vest, warning triangle, fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.
The examiner will also provide feedback at the end of your test. Your results of the practical driving test will be based on your scores within the different categories. You are allowed a total of five faults during the entire test and less than three faults under specific categories.
Instructional Ability Test
This stage of the exam covers the ability of the ADI trainee to deliver tuition to the learner driver. You will be examined on your ability and skill to recognise and correct any mistakes made by the learner driver in an appropriate manner.
This test is conducted by the RSA examiner and is split into two different role play scenarios which will be fully explained to the ADI candidate before the test.
